Past Perfect Continuous

Past Perfect Continuous is used to express an action that started in the past and continued for some time in the past. auxiliary verb “had been” is used in this tense.

“Since” or “for” is used before the “time reference”

Subject + Auxiliary verb + Main verb + object + Time reference

  • She had been working as a doctor for over 40 years.

  • He had been dating Sara for 3 years before they got married.

  • She had been playing game for half an hour when we arrived home.

  • She had been playing piano for one hour.

  • He had been cleaning his house for half an hour when we arrived.

  • She had been living in this house for 3 years.

Negative Sentences:

  • They had not been living here since 2003.

  • It had not been raining for three days.

  • We had not been working here for five days.

  • They had not been studying very hard.

Interrogative Sentences:

  • Had you been waiting there for few hours?

  • Had she been eating for one hour?

  • Had they been living in this house since 1986?

  • Had he been waiting his dad for two hours?
