Past Continuous Tense

Past continuous tense is used for an action that was happening in the past. It shows an incomplete or unfinished action in the past.

We use was for the subjects I, he, she, and were for the subjects, we, you and they.

It is formed using was or were + verb + ing.

Past Continuous Tense

Affirmative Sentences:

  • They were watching t.v.

  • He was playing.

  • I was eating dinner.

  • She was sleeping at 8 p.m. yesterday.

Negative Sentences:

We use was not for the subjects I, he, she, and were not for the subjects, we, you and they.

  • They were not eating their food at 6 P.M. yesterday.

  • He was not going to school.

  • She was not reading her story last night.

Interrogative Sentences:

  • Was she eating her chocolate last night?

  • Were they going to market yesterday?

  • Was he doing his homework?
